What do all the abbreviations mean?

As with any industry there are a range of abbreviations which aren't necessarily obvious to a learner. Initially the abbreviations seem designed to confuse you and make it harder to understand. Here are a list of a few common abbreviations to help you out.

Abbreviation Meaning Description
DoT Department Of Transport The Government department that tests drivers have attained a satisfactory level of driving standard.
DSA Driving Standards Agency The regulatory body that ensures all companies and instructors of LGV tuition are competent and fit to do so.
DVLA The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency The Government department responsible for issuing you with a provisional and, hopefully, a full LGV driving licence.
HGV Heavy Goods Vehicle The old abbreviation for trucks and lorries.
LGV Large Goods Vehicle The new abbreviation for trucks and lorries.

Do I need to sit a theory test to upgrade from a Class C1 or C to Class C+E?

No you do not. If you hold a current full LGV licence for either a Class C1 or Class C large goods vehicle you can take the practical test without having to sit another theory test.

If I have an old provisional licence for C and C+E that was issued before the January 1997 licence change, can I go straight to C+E (Articulated)?

No you can't. You must start at the beginning and pass the Theory Test and gain a full Class C (Rigid) licence before progressing to Class C+E (Articulated).

How long do I have to wait to do the Category C+E after successfully passing my Class C Test?

You only have to wait until your new Class C licence is received back from the DVLA in Swansea with the Class C+E Provisional entitlement on it. This usually takes 7-10 days.
