At Stockport HGV Training Centre Ltd, you get a complete HGV training solution. From start to finish, our experienced team will guide you through every step of the process, including arranging your HGV medical and preparing for and booking the LGV theory test.

Here is your guide to pre-tuition, so you know exactly what to expect prior to taking your test. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact us.

What you will need

When you come for your LGV medical you need to bring:

  • Your driving licence

  • Name and address of your doctor or doctor’s practice

  • If you wear glasses for driving you may need to visit your own optician after the medical

We provide you with details on where to get your medical and help you complete the forms and check them before you send them to the DVLA.

The medicals are carried out by our local GPs, Monday to Thursday, 9-10am with no appointment necessary. Alternate times or days can be arranged on request.

Stage 1: HGV medical

Anyone wanting to gain an LGV licence is required to have a private medical. It is a fairly simple procedure involving an eye test, blood pressure check and questions relating to your health, to make sure you are fit to drive the vehicle. There are one or two medical conditions which can prevent you obtaining the licence, for example, vision in one eye only and epilepsy. If you want to have a look further into the HGV medical requirements follow the link, or contact us at the office and we can discuss confidentially with you what it entails.

Once you gain your LGV licence you will then have to complete a self-declaration regarding your fitness to drive every 5 years until you are 45 years old. At that point you will then have to have a medical done every 5 years until you are 65 years old. After this, the medical is every year.

Stage 2: Pre-tuition pack

We can help with your application and check all the forms before they are posted 1st class recorded to the DVLA. This includes change of address, photo, licence change from another country. We will set you up with our Starter Pack which includes online learning material for the Hazard Perception and Multiple Choice for the vocational licence and Case Studies for your CPC.

This can all be sorted online and over the phone to save journeys to our office.

Don’t forget we are always at the end of an email or phone.

Stage 3 – LGV theory test and assessment lesson

Your licence will be sent to you (this generally takes 7-10 days but it can take longer), then the real work can begin. You contact us and we will book your LGV theory test on a date to suit you. We have tests booked up to 10 weeks ahead at the Stockport Test Centre so there is usually lots of choice. We can, of course, book theories at other test centres if you are happy to wait.  We will also check that you have been given the correct provisional entitlements.

Depending on the category you are going for we may book your 2 hour assessment lesson, which is when the real fun starts. You get behind the wheel and have your first experience of driving an LGV vehicle. Your instructor will perform a demonstration drive, run through the controls and then you are away! At first you’ll be on the quieter roads while you get the feel for the vehicle but it won’t take long before you’ll be out on the main roads in the thick of it. Towards the end of your lesson your instructor will assess your drive, once your nerves have calmed down and you have relaxed a bit.

At the end of the lesson we will discuss your assessment lesson, the hours which have been recommended and when you want to have the course - then give you a cost. All our courses are run in a block. So, for instance, if you were recommended 18 hours (which would include both the reverse test and the driving test), we would run that over three days with your test on the third day!

You can now proceed straight to the C1E or CE vehicle without taking a test in the C1 or C vehicle first. We generally do training in the C1 or C before to get the basics closer to Test Standard and for Safety reasons, once everyone is happy we move on to the training with the trailer.

You could hold your full licence 6-12 weeks from the day you had your medical.
