Provisional licence

To apply for an HGV / LGV provisional licence the first step is a private medical. We can sort this out for you most days of the week without the need for an appointment.
Theory test

There are two parts to your licence, the Vocational licence and the Driver Qualification Card (Driver CPC).
All trainees gaining their first LGV licence have to take the driving theory tests module 1a and 1b. Module 1a is the hazard perception test and module 1b is the multiple choice theory test.
All trainees who are going to drive for a living or are under 21 years of age will need to take the module 2 theory test. To find out more visit the Driver CPC page.
Lessons
There have been many changes to the training of LGV since November 2021. We still tailor the training to suit each individual, looking at your past experience and the category you want to drive. This can start with an assessment to determine how many hours you need or in the case of the CE you may run the course over consecutive days or split the reverse from the driving whichever suits you best.
Driving test

We block book our courses so that they run over consecutive days with your test on the final day. We endeavour to ensure that each pupil has their own instructor and vehicle for the length of their course. This provides a training environment which allows the instructor to continually train and then assess each pupil so that he can tailor training to suit each individual’s needs. This has changed slightly as you can now go straight to the CE, it isn’t always possible to have the same instructor for each stage but the driving side of the licence is with the same instructor.
The test itself is now split into two parts 30 minutes for the reverse test and 1 hour for the driving test.
Demonstration test

This is module 4; the practical demonstration test to gain your Driver Qualification Card (DQC or driver CPC card). This is not relevant to all trainees but will be discussed with you when you first come in for your medical. The test itself is 30 minutes long and requires a vehicle to demonstrate the answers to the questions. We have a comprehensive training system for this test which is very effective and provides you with a good basic understanding when you start your 1st job or purchase your 1st vehicle.
